But what is Titanium and why use it in jewellery? Well, it's a light-weight, incredibly strong metal with some amazing properties. Very tricky to work with, but with a little persuasion it can be persuaded to take on many colours of the rainbow, which is how these amazing coloured pieces are created.



Jane and Julian have a passion for creating colour with titanium when the titanium is anodised. There are two ways of doing this, either with heat or by placing the item in a slightly alkaline bath and passing a current through the water. Either way, an oxide layer is formed on the surface of the metal and this acts like a prism. Different voltages – or temperatures- create different thicknesses of oxide, so different prisms. Light passes through the oxide layer, is split, bounces back and you see colour. Different colours, according to the thickness of the layer.

Because the titanium is polished and the oxide layer is itself reflective, sometimes you can get a sort of double bounce. The effect of that is that you’ll see two or even three different colours, depending on the angle from which you view the item of jewellery. (The bi-phasic or tri-phasic effect).
The real skill is in controlling this, knowing how to create different shades and different bi-phasic and tri-phasic effects.

These earrings are handmade by Lynne of Fyne Silver, from the seaglass that washes up on the shores of Loch Fyne, near her home.

Each piece is completely unique - either in colour, shape or size. From subtle shades of blue to bright, vivid greens and frosted light aqua.


They are light and easy to wear - carefully mounted in sterling silver and hung from silver ear drops, which makes them fantastic for sensitive ears.

Artisans Spotlight - Fyne Silver

The Emporium is all about finding one-of-a-kind gifts - gifts you couldn't possibly find in a supermarket or chain shop. Nothing is bought from a catalogue and all our suppliers are talented crafters primarily from the UK.

A great example of one of our talented team is Lynne of Fyne Silver. Lynne lives on the shores of Loch Fyne, Scotland, and loves to beachcomb. She picks up little pieces of what she finds - shells, ceramic, glass and other treasures, then combines them with enamel and 925 silver to create truly one-of-a-kind gifts! (We arn't joking - each of her bracelets is a true treasure and she truly can't make two the same!)



Frosted sea glass is another feature of her works, cleaned and protected to create pieces that are rustic yet refined.



Her mussel shell earrings are a real favourite - we sold out of these days after listing them in the shop. Luckily, Lynne is making more for us to arrive by the 1st December - plenty of time for a unique Christmas gift.



My favourites, however, are the ceramic earrings. These delicate little pieces hang gracefully from sterling silver earwires and are very feminine and delicate - don't worry, the ceramic has been carefully enamelled, protecting them from any harm.
